Department of Zoology

Department of Zoology, of the Institute of Science, Nagpur, is a renowned teaching and research centre with well equipped laboratories. It is one of the oldest departments of this Institute with 85 years of existence. It was established in 1929, and postgraduate courses were started in 1930.

In support of our mission the Zoology Department faculty members strive to:

  • Act as mentors to undergraduates through advising them in research & learning.
  • Teach students the value of cross-disciplinary thinking by providing them with educational and research opportunities between zoology and other fields of study.
  • Serve as good role models to students for safe and ethical professional behaviour.
  • Encourage students to value diversity and to develop a global perspective through International experiences in zoology.

Goals & Objectives:

  • To disseminate knowledge on zoology and related areas through active participation in related professional activities, such as zoological Society, Workshops, Symposia/ Conferences.
  • To produce skilled man power of well trained zoologists, capable of taking up positions in various socio economic sectors of the country.
  • To build research capabilities as required by the national development and academic needs.
  • To develop capabilities for the provision of consultancy and technical services as well as short term specialized training to both public and private sectors.
  • To produce teachers who will choose, produce and make use of local resources and educational media to enrich students' learning.
  • To inspire the students towards better understanding and use of IT/Computer oriented inter phase.
  • To inspire the students for competitive examinations.

Brief History:

The Department offers, both under-graduate and post-graduate courses. For post-graduation, this department has 20 seats. Students can opt for Mammalian Reproductive Physiology, Fresh Water Zoology or Cell Biology as a specialization. Many students from the Department have topped in the University and brought laurels to the Institute.

Number of students and faculty members are actively engaged in research. More than 100 students have received Ph.D and many of them are engaged as Educators, Administrators in various parts of the country and abroad. Major thrust areas in research include Reproductive Biology, Endocrinology, Embryology, Limnology, Plankton Ecology, Fishery Biology, Chronobiology, Neurobiology and Toxicology.

The contribution of renowned Zoologists, like Dr. M. A. Moghe, Dr. Bhalerao, Dr. Karam Singh, Dr. S.M.H.Khatib, Dr.K.V.R.Murthy, Dr.H.V.Kashyab, Dr.A.Gopalkrishna, Dr. V. B. Marathe, Dr. P. V. Rangnekar, Dr. K. B. Karim, Dr. V. M. Sapkal, Dr. Mrs. S. A. Bhide, Dr. M. M. Gadegone, Dr. N.V. Huilgol, Dr. M. R. Thosar etc, from this Institute has been recognized at National and International level.

Government of Maharashtra has honoured Dr. Gopalkrishna with a Best Teacher award. Dr. Miss K. B. Karim has received D.Sc. degree from Nagpur University. The Department has organized many symposia and Conferences. So also, the Department has been organizing Expert Lectures on various topics for the benefit of the students.
